Haines (Alaska) Evergreen Catalog Unites Four Local Organizations

Haines Borough Public Library in Haines, Alaska has gone live with Evergreen, the highly scalable, open-source library automation software. Equinox Software Inc., "The Evergreen Experts," oversaw data migration and software configuration, and will provide round-the-clock ongoing technical support.
The Haines library catalog is part of a cooperative partnership among the public library, the Haines Elementary Media Center, the Haines High School Library, and the Sheldon Museum and Cultural Center. Their new Evergreen catalog unites the catalog records of all four organizations for a seamless discovery experience for the Haines population while preserving the policies and procedures for each institution.
Ann Myren, Project Coordinator, said, "Our patrons will be pleased to have the opportunity to manage their library accounts online, not to mention the fast and easy searching capability. And of course, staff is looking forward to exploring all the new options they'll have as well. It's just an exciting project for everyone."

The Tlingit Indians who originally settled the Chilkat Valley around Haines called the area "Dei-Shi" which means "End of the Trail." In 1879, a Presbyterian minister came to the area to establish a school and a mission and named it in honor of Francina Haines who had been the chairwoman of the fund raising committee for its construction. The new catalog combined catalog has over 56,000 bibliographic records.
